4 Reasons Why Your Garage Door Remote Won’t Work

garage door remote won't work

The last thing you want is to try to leave the house for the day or try to come home, only to find that your garage door remote won’t work. Many homes have keypads that you can enter a code into to get into your garage, but still, no one wants to have to get in and out of their car, and having to open and close your garage door becomes a whole fiasco. There are several reasons why your garage door remote might not be working, ranging from easy fixes to perhaps it’s time to call in the professionals.

Here are some of the common reasons why your garage door remote might not be working and what you can do to fix the issue.

#1. The Battery Is Dead

Ah, one of the easiest reasons why your garage door remote won’t work to fix. If your garage door remote isn’t working, it could simply be because it needs new batteries. If you don’t remember the last time you replaced the batteries in your garage door remote, it’s likely time to replace them. On average, garage door remote batteries last about 2 years, though this can vary depending on individual circumstances.

If your garage door will open when you use the control panel on the wall, but not when you try to use the batteries, this is likely why your garage door remote won’t work. If you replace the batteries and it’s still not working, this could be because the battery contacts are dirty, worn, or wet. It could also mean that it’s time to replace your garage door remote as a whole.

#2. The Lock Button Is Engaged

This is another reason why your garage door remote won’t work that’s easy to fix. If the lock button is engaged, this will keep your garage door remote from working properly. When you check this on your control panel. If it’s locked, you can simply unlock it by pressing the lock button, and then your garage door remote should work again. It’s a good idea to test it, to be sure.

If you disengage the lock button and your remote still isn’t working, this could mean that there’s another issue occurring.

#3. The Remote Signal Is Too Weak Or Is Disrupted

So, you’ve checked the batteries and you’ve checked the lock button, but your remote still isn’t opening or closing your garage door. This could be because there’s something interrupting the signal from your remote or because the signal from your remote is simply too weak. People who live in areas such as around military bases often struggle with signal interference, which can be helped with a radio receiver kit.

Your garage door remote should work within range, which is about 20 ft for many garages. If you’re out of range, it shouldn’t open your garage door. However, if you’re within range and it isn’t working, this could be because of aforementioned signal interference or damage to your opener’s antenna. If you’re struggling with the signal, a garage door repair professional, such as the team here at Advanced Door, can help you out.

#4. The Remote Needs To Be Reprogrammed

Sometimes, your garage door remote and your opener can lose communication with each other. This can happen especially if you use your garage door remote a lot. When it does, your garage door remote won’t work, and you’ll need to reprogram it so that the signal between your garage door opener and your garage door remote can be restored.

This is something that you can do yourself. The set-up instructions for your remote should tell you how to do this. Typically, you’ll want to press the ‘learn’ button on your garage door opener. It should start to blink. Then, you can press the open button on your remote within 30 seconds. After about a minute, it should work. You can test your remote to see if it was successfully reprogrammed.

If this does not work, you can either consult the instruction manual or the manufacturer. In some cases, you may need the help of a garage door expert.
