Opener Problems
There are more moving parts in a garage door opener than any other part of the garage. This also means that there are many different things that can go wrong with a garage door opener.
The most common problem with garage door openers is the electric eyes at the bottom of the garage door. They’re necessary and come in handy when something is in the way of the garage door or when a child isn’t paying attention, but they can be a hassle when they are bumped and out of alignment. When the eyes are out of alignment, the door will start to go down and then it will stop and go back to the up position. This is followed by the opener lights blinking. These blinking lights have a meaning and they are usually saying there is something in the road of the door.
One way to know if the eyes are out of alignment is to physically look at the eyes and see if the LED lights are illuminated. If the LED lights are not illuminated or if they are blinking this means the eyes are not in alignment.
This is an easy fix and can save from having to take the time and money of having a technician fix it for you. Look at the eyes and see which eye is out of alignment and then adjust the eye until it is lined up with the other eye and the LED light turns on. Once this happens push the wall button and see if the door goes down. If the door goes now then the problem is solved. If the eyes are aligned and the LED lights are on and the door still won’t go down then there is more than likely something else wrong and it is a good idea to have a technician look at the opener.

Another common problem with garage door openers is when the gear and sprocket inside the machine goes bad. This is easy to diagnose. If wall button is pushed and the motor is running, but the door doesn’t move this is probably a bad gear and/or sprocket. Another way to see if the gear is bad is to take off the cover of the opener and inspect the gear (Be sure to unplug the opener before you try and fix and/or diagnose any problems). If the gear looks striped and there are plastic shavings on the bottom of the cover then the gear is bad. This is fixable and will just need to be replaced by a technician.
